Black HerStory Month Day 2

And Welcome back for day two of Black HerStory Month! Today’s Queen, we ALL know and LOVE! Her elegance, her grace, her candor, and beauty! She is our FOREVER First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama!! I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting this magnificent woman, but let me tell you, her Netflix documentary Becoming, had me in tears in the first three minutes!! I think it was because it was so, relatable, in my opinion, or maybe because I see myself in her, and I look up to her!!

“Even when it’s not pretty or perfect. Even when its’ more real than you want it to be. Your story is what you have, what you will always have, it is something to own”-Michelle Obama

Humble Beginnings: If you have read her book, or follow her in any way you know that the former FLOTUS, born Michelle Robinson , graced us with her presence on January 17, 1964 ( Capricorn’s Salute). Raised on the South Side of Chicago Illinois, she was born to a father Fraser Robinson, who spent most of his life working for the City of Chicago at a water filtration plant. Her mother, Marian Robinson, who, in Michelle’s early life was a homemaker, but did eventually return to work as an executive assistant at a local bank. She has one brother, Craig, to whom she looked up to and admired deeply! They lived in a cozy apartment on the second floor of her aunt Robbie’s home where The Former First Lady shared many fond memories. FLOTUS spent her primary school years at Bryn Mawr Elementary, where she proved to be a bright student and well ahead of the game! #BlackGirlMagic beaming! She sailed through high school, got an awakening in college and started life!

“you can’t make decision based on fear and the possibility of what might happen”- Michelle Obama

Early Career: Upon graduating from Princeton University in 1985, with honors, after being told she wouldn’t get in mind you, she went to Harvard Law School, from which she earned her Juris Doctor (JD). After completing a bit of humanitarian work she went on to work for the Sidley and Austin Law Firm where she met, what she describes based on a head shot, as -a less-than-flattering guy with a big smile and a whiff of geekiness-. Yes, this is how our future FLOTUS described her soon-to-be husband and the 44th POTUS!!! lol GOTTA LOVE IT!! From Sidley and Austin the Future Mrs. Obama racked up an impressive philanthropic and humanitarian resume working in non-profit as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, along with the VP for Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center. She then embarked on a career in public service and became an Assistant to the Mayor, and then served as the assistant commissioner of planning and development for the City of Chicago, as well as the Executive Director for the Chicago Office of Public Allies amongst a host of other admirable positions. She later married that geeky, sexy, baritone-rich, voiced man and had two beautiful daughters, Natasha (Sasha) and Malia. Upon her husbands announcement of running for president Mrs. Obama soon quit her job to work on his presidential campaign.

I’ve seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are”- Michelle Obama

Today: Michelle Obama, to many Americas will ALWAYS be the most gracious first lady! Today, she spends her days enjoying life outside of the White House. She has developed The Michelle Obama Podcast. She continues to be an advocate for the community, encouraging people to get out and vote, through her When We All Vote organization which is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that is on a mission to increase participation in every election, regardless of party affiliation and close the race and age voting gap by changing the culture around voting, harnessing grassroots energy, and through strategic partnerships to reach every American.
